Teaching Language Through an Equity and Justice Lens

Middle school Spanish teacher William Yepes-Amaya was a presenter at the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association's annual conference held October 24 to 27 in Springfield, MA. William joined colleagues Marialuisa Di Stefano, lecturer at UMASS Amherst and Abelardo Almanzán-Vázquez, Spanish teacher at The Putney School to present Teaching a Second Language Through an Equity and Social Justice Lens. The three have been collaborating for the past two years to advocate for changes in curriculum and in the community that promote empathy. Their presentation challenged educators to recognize themselves as individuals with their own identities that they bring to their classrooms. This process allows teachers to honor the multiple facets of identity in their students and helps to bring equity into the classroom. They showcased their experiences and how recognizing their own identities has transformed the way they address each learner, their teaching, and the community.
