During April break, BDS transformed into a mad science lab where campers learned about volcanoes, earthquakes, and paleontology. They studied strawberry DNA and learned about watersheds in the outdoor classroom. A guest visit from Dr. Victor Von Doom (aka teacher Dale Armstrong) gave campers an up-close look at what this mad scientist had cooked up in his lab. Be sure to ask a camper about the penny experiment Dr. Doom led and what they learned about 1982. Camp staff fostered excitement and a spirit of inquiry for our campers, who fully participated with wonder and curiosity.
We piloted an art session in which children explored many art media, including painting, drawing, and sculpture. They made giant trading cards, used oil paints to create dramatic dragonscapes, and made shrink-plastic key chains. Campers also worked with papier-mâché, sewing, printmaking, and weaving. The staff encouraged experimentation and creativity in every camper. Several families reported that their children came home eager to continue creating and to expand on the artistic ideas they discovered at camp.
Many thanks to everyone for a great team effort and a phenomenal week of programming, community, and learning.
