Since 2020, seventh-grade science teacher Maggie Small has been connected with Saltwater Classroom in Camden, Maine. The mission of the organization is to “foster an ethic of ocean stewardship in young students, as well as learners of all ages, through hands-on ocean education, tech-integration, and global collaboration.” Since first connecting with Saltwater Classroom, Small has incorporated their materials into her lessons as she teaches about the water cycle and our environment. In late summer, Small was invited by Saltwater Classroom’s founder and executive director, Alexandra Doudera, to speak at their annual gathering.
“I spoke about my perspective on the importance of ocean education,” Small said, “and how I’ve used Saltwater Classroom in my own classroom, and the work that I will be doing as a member of the Ocean Educator Team with Saltwater Classroom as they launch the next phase of their Ocean Literacy Platform. I look forward to continuing this work throughout the year and bringing more of these resources and research to Belmont Day.”
