This week in sixth grade science class, students became crystal scientists! The class conducted an exciting hands-on lab growing beautiful borax crystals, which helped them understand how rocks and minerals form deep within the Earth. This introductory activity kicked off their unit on plate tectonics and the geosphere, bringing big geological concepts to life through a fun, colorful experiment. Students observed firsthand how crystals grow and take shape, much like the amazing processes that create the rocks and minerals we find all around us. It was a great reminder that science happens everywhere, even in a simple solution!
