Music students in pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade have started the year gaining a basic understanding of the C scale. To do so, we have been singing the letters, as well as made-up songs on each note of the scale, and visually tracking staff notes as the scale is being played. Pre-k is using a chart with just the letters, while the kindergartners have begun visualizing the staff, and first graders are experiencing the scale by playing the Orff instruments. And to get the students in the mood for music, our giant wooden G clef, also known as the treble clef, escorts students to and from class each day.
