What is a kiva?

What is a kiva? To Pueblo Indians, it is a ceremonial gathering space. In Swahili, kiva means “unity” or “agreement.” At Belmont Day, the kiva, dedicated in honor of former head of school Lenesa Leana, is a gathering space for our community, a place where we learn, listen, and share.

We gather in the kiva for:

  • classes
  • arts sharing
  • faculty meetings
  • recess and breaks
  • Capstone presentations
  • class meetings
  • cross-graded activities
  • kindergarten poetry
