Mentoring New Teachers
The Belmont Day School Associate Teacher Program offers an exciting opportunity for teaching and learning. In collaboration with Lesley University, the program prepares prospective teachers for early childhood education or elementary education positions. Graduates of the program complete requirements for a Master of Education degree as well as Massachusetts teacher certification.
Associate teachers spend twice as much time in Belmont Day School classrooms as most participants in university-based teaching certificate programs. The Associate Teacher Program takes less time and is less expensive than the on-campus program.
Associate teachers spend a year working in two semester-long classroom placements. Alongside the Belmont Day School faculty, they teach in all subject areas. Associate teachers attend seminars conducted by Belmont Day School faculty and complete coursework at Lesley University.
Associate teachers are an integral part of the Belmont Day School community. They are included in teacher meetings, school functions, parent-teacher conferences, and professional development workshops. The combination of classroom practice, academic study, and professional interaction provides a demanding but rewarding experience.
