Spring Enrichment Classes

Session 3 Class Descriptions


Enrollment for Belmont Day students and for students attending other schools is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that community enrollment is limited and all classes described below may not be available. Session 3 runs Monday, March 18 to Monday, June 10.

MONDAY

Fractured Fairy Tales {3:30-4:30 p.m., grades pre-k and kindergarten | Ms. Gruzynski}
Students will read various fairy and folk tales from around the world and then develop and build a project reflecting the story. Projects will vary from creating components for a fairy garden with clay, to designing and decorating a castle, to creating puppets.

Basketball Buddies {3:30-4:30 p.m. grades 1 & 2 | Mr. Jean-Mary}
Sportsmanship, teamwork, athleticism, and learning foundational basketball skills are all part of this class. By combining the fundamentals of footwork, passing, and dribbling, Mr. Jean-Mary will teach participants to shoot for the stars, sink their shots, and work together as a team of basketball buddies!

Wizarding & Quitdditch {3:30-4:30 p.m.,grades 3-5 | Ms. Buck}
Calling all wizards and witches, we are now accepting students in the Belmont Day School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Children will  get sorted into houses, create wands, learn spells, await owls, and hop on a broom to learn the magical sport of Quidditch.

TUESDAYS

Monet & Me {Grades pre-k and kindergarten | Ms. Gruzynski}
The class will introduce students to a variety of artists and art techniques from around the world and to works as diverse as early cave drawings, Monet’s impressionist art, and Jackson Pollock’s expressionist paintings. The class will end with a gallery show, where students can share their work with families.

Flag Football I {3:30-4:30 p.m., grades 1 & 2 | Mr. Santos}
This non-contact version of football features similar rules except the players must remove the ball carrier’s flag from a Velcro belt to end the down. Through an exciting mix of instruction, drills, and games students will develop the fundamental skills of passing, catching, running, and defending. Activities will promote teamwork, winning with humility, and losing gracefully. Safety is the number one priority and Mr. Santos will lead age-appropriate activities and enforce a no-contact rule.

Soap Making {3:30-4:30 p.m., pre-k & kindergarten | Mr. Smith}
Students will learn the process of melt-and-pour soap making to create products that they can use and enjoy. Possible projects include bar soap, bath bombs, lip balms, bath salts, and more! Students will receive recipes so that they can easily replicate the projects at home.

Master Chef {3:30-4:30 p.m., grades 3 to 5 | Chef Lightbody}
Back by popular demand! Students will explore great cuisines from around the world using diverse ingredients and authentic recipes. Learn about nutrition and basic cooking techniques. Each week participants will go home with a recipe and treats to share. This five session class meets March 19 and 26; April 2, 9, and 23.

WEDNESDAYS

Yoga {3:30-4:30 p.m., pre-k to grade 3 | Ms. Peterman}
Participants will learn yoga poses and how to be centered and reflective while experiencing the satisfaction that comes from being part of a great group and practice.

Art Unplugged {3:30-4:30 p.m., kindergarten to grade 3 | Ms. Meditz}
This class creates a relaxed atmosphere for participants to let their creativity flow.Students will be presented with base projects as a starting point for experimentation and self-expression. A wide array of inspiring and unusual materials they will be provided for the creation of unique abstract and realistic works.

WEDO Robotics {Grades 1 and 2 | Ms. Grunzyski}
Students will be challenged to design, implement, and share solutions to robotic challenges. The session will start with learning the basics of the LEGO® WEDO robotics kit and app, later moving on to solving various open-ended problems. Students will develop building and programming skills while working collaboratively.

THURSDAYS

Super Santos Stars {Grades pre-k and kindergarten | Mr. Santos}
This class is designed for students to have fun trying a variety of games and sports while maximizing their flexibility, balance, coordination, and self esteem. Activities will develop hand-eye coordination, promote team-building, and develop skills such a throwing, catching, running, and perhaps even a little tumbling.   

Clown Class {Grades 1 and 2 | Mr. Parsons}

Theatrical clowning teaches many things about performing: how to create an energized presence, how to sustain the pleasure of playing in the moment, and above all else, it helps us accept our own unique ridiculousness, which in turn paves the way for true theatrical expression. We will cover many fun performance-based activities including masked performance, hat tricks, juggling, makeup, balloon creatures, and building an act.

Will It Float {Grades 3-5 | Ms. Gruzynski}
Cardboard + tape + creativity  = A BOAT. Students will create and test designs to build a cardboard boat that they can actually climb into. They will experiment with buoyancy, drag, and absorption and learn about classic boat designs in maritime history. We hope to test our boats and paddle them across the BDS pool in a cardboard boat regatta. 

FRIDAYS

World Drumming {1-2 p.m., pre-k to grade 2 | Mr. Rubinshteyn}
Participants will take a musical trip around the world to explore new instruments and cultures through drumming. 

Soccer {2 to 3 p.m., pre-k to grade 2 | Super Soccer Stars Staff}

The Super Soccer Stars program was developed by a team of early childhood, soccer, and behavioral specialists. Their licensed and experienced coaches will introduce sophisticated skills, support technical improvement, and foster social development in a fun, non-competitive environment that is guaranteed to have each child learning and having a blast from the moment the whistle blows.

Chess 1 & 2 {1 to 2 p.m. Level 1, grades 1 to 8; 2 to 3 p.m. Level 2, grades 1 to 8 | Igor Foygel}
Nationally recognized player and 2012 New England Championship Igor Foygel will teach the tactics, history, and theory of the game. Mr. Foygel is a patient teacher who loves the game and helping students develop logic and strategic thinking so they will love the game, too.

Martial Arts {1:00-2:00 p.m., grades 1 to 8 | Sensei Bobby}
Instructor Bobby Giordano from American Martial Arts Center, will teach self-defense skills—including kicking, boxing, and grappling—that will increase your child’s confidence, discipline, agility, speed, and power. 

Reverse Engineering {2-3 p.m., grades 3 to 5 | Ms. Stathopoulos}
Using the design and engineering process, students will create a plan for building a sculpture, robot, or creature using parts from old machines that they have disassembled themselves. Basic safety and proper use of screwdrivers, hand drills, hammers, hot glue guns, and saws will be covered. There will be time each class for students to enjoy tinkering and testing out new ideas and theories. We encourage you to bring in old cameras, remote controls, or other small electronics. No prior experience is necessary.

Dungeons & Dragons {2-3:30 p.m., grades 4 to 8 | Mr. Brewer}
Heroes wanted for service by Her Majesty The Queen. The Kingdom requires brave heroes to combat a growing evil threatening the land. All witches, wizards, rangers, rogues, clerics, and fighters should make haste to the castle center and announce themselves. Danger and adventure is upon our very threshold! Who dares to answer the call? Students who join us will learn how to run their own campaign in Pathfinder’s Dungeons & Dragons.
