On Thursday, June 10 we celebrated our eighth graders at the annual Athletics Banquet. Every student was individually recognized for their athletic accomplishments and athletes even returned the favor with a “Thank You” tribute of their own.

On Thursday, we celebrated our eighth graders at the Athletics Banquet—each student was individually recognized for their athletic accomplishments over the course of their BDS career.

As highlighted during the final athletics sharing assembly of the year this morning, middle school athletes got after it this spring. From the fields to the courts to the trails, middle school athletes spread their talents over nine different offerings and competed in three separate athletic sessions.

In the third and final three-week mini-season this spring, the eighth-grade class chose from lacrosse, tennis, and track & field. A total of 14 athletes selected track & field, and they brought their “A” game.

Tennis athletes have outnumbered their lacrosse and track counterparts in all three sessions this spring. As each middle school grade cycles through the tennis, lacrosse, and track offerings, tennis has drawn nearly half of the class each time.

After a winter season devoted to fitness, the spring coaches continue to make it a priority during their sport-specific offerings.

For the first time since May 2019 lacrosse is back at Belmont Day and Coach Abbey Nyland couldn’t be happier. The first spring athletics session brought nearly 20 sixth grade athletes to the field and the group has been getting after it.

Mountain biking was introduced to Belmont Day seven years ago as a middle school club. The club met once a week and was limited to experienced riders who owned their own bike. Despite its success, the program remained an exclusive activity with limited participation. This year, under the leadership of second-year physical education and athletics teacher Alex Tzelnic, mountain biking has grown into a full athletics offering, and, like the rest of Belmont Day’s middle school sports, is open to all students regardless of experience or equipment.
