An Exciting Journey
There is nothing the faculty at Belmont Day School enjoys more than talking about the school's curriculum--which science concepts to study and when to introduce them, which countries to explore in a trip around the world, the best time to learn keyboarding skills, how to use manipulatives in mathematics--these are a sampling of the topics that permeate teachers' conversations.
When faculty have extended time for reflection, their discussions lean toward a deeper question: when our students leave Belmont Day School at the end of their eighth grade year, what do we want them to carry with them?
- We want them to love learning, to cherish curiosity, to appreciate hard work and its results.
- We want them to become independent in their approach to research--to know what resources to use and where to find them and to utilize the Internet as a tool for gaining information.
- We want them to relish conversations that are honest and complex, to listen closely to nuance and feeling, and to appreciate the many different experiences people can have in their lives.
- We want them to know loyalty and friendship and humor.
- We want them to ask the difficult questions, take risks, think outside of the box.
Like every healthy school, we strive to create an environment that is supportive, stimulating, creative, caring, and challenging. We know that when teachers are excited about their subject matter and their students, when teachers learn together and construct integrated projects, students cannot help but be caught up in the same enthusiastic process.
