The BDS Garden is in full bloom thanks to the careful planning and planting by faculty and students that took place on Community Service Day in May. The garden is home to herbs, flowers, vegetables and many birds that have nested in the gourd bird feeders made by students.
A team of faculty and staff are braving this summer's heat to tend the garden so that our students will be greeted by a harvest of potatoes, herbs, squash and tomatoes when they return in September.

Mr. Arum harvested the first zucchini of the season this week!

"...Teaching involves as much listening as talking, taking in as well as giving out. With approximately the right ratio of give and take, the class becomes both a group of individuals and an individual group. By allowing ourselves to hear students' voices, teachers are allowing them to hear each other as well, and that can be as valuable an education as what we tell them." - from "The Value of Getting Off Track" by David Downing.
Fifth Grade Teacher David Downing completes his twenty-first year of teaching at Belmont Day School this month. Mr. Downing, well known among his colleagues for his deft pen, is deeply respected for his masterful teaching and knowledge of children. His article "The Value of Getting Off Track" appears in the current issue
of the prestigious online NAIS publication Independent Teacher.
