Wired for Learning
With two fully-equipped media labs, library multimedia stations, multiple computers
in each classroom, projection equipment, digital microscopes, cameras, scanners,
a laptop for every faculty member, and a local network that extends throughout the
building, Belmont Day School offers a state-of-the-art technology program.
In each grade, teachers make use of technological tools to help students conduct
research, organize information, create presentations, and document their learning.
Technology is used where it makes sense to advance teaching and learning goals.
Through discussions of ethical considerations, students also learn about
responsible and appropriate use of technology.
Specific skills are incorporated into the curriculum to give students the foundation
they need to use the technology at their disposal. Primary students are introduced
to the computer through games that promote math and literacy skills. In third grade
students learn keyboarding. Fourth through sixth graders learn word processing,
how to do research on the Internet, how to use databases and spreadsheets, and
how to create multi-media presentations. Middle schoolers may choose
technology-based arts electives, such as digital photography or digital
video production.
Students are not the only ones at Belmont Day School to increase their technological
know-how. Teachers participate in the Pioneer Program, which funds training for faculty who wish to develop and model
innovative uses of technology in their classrooms.
