Shared Experience, Shared Learning
Friday mornings are a special time for the BDS community, a time of coming together to share experiences. On some Fridays, the students gather with their cross-graded partners to work together on an activity. On other Fridays everyone attends a class play or an assembly.
On six or seven Friday mornings per year, the Parents' Association sponsors assemblies designed to enrich the educational experience of the children. Each year's schedule of enrichment assemblies represents a diverse group of performers and artistic genres. In 2006-2007, for example, the enrichment roster included music from around the world with Rwandan singer Jean Paul Samputu and women's music ensemble Libana, a presentation by Ophelia Dahl about the work of Partners in Health, storytelling with master storyteller Beth Horner, Snappy Dance Theater, and a performance of traditional folk music and dance by the Revels touring ensemble.
But the quintessential community experience at Belmont Day School is Sharing Assembly. All of the classes, pre-k through eight, gather in the performing arts center, along with the faculty and many parents and siblings. Each class shares something they have been working on. Sharing Assembly provides students an opportunity to display their accomplishments and to practice speaking and performing in front of the most supportive audience imaginable. Students watch their cross-graded partners present their work and feel pride in their association. Watching other classes, they are able to look back at past achievements and forward to future challenges. Parents can celebrate their own children's accomplishments and get a sense of the breadth of activity going on across the school.
Sharing Assembly encourages us to look at the world through one another's eyes. It reminds us of the strength of community and the excitement of learning. Everyone is a learner here!
