We are looking for experienced, dynamic, and talented educators to join the Belmont Day School community. The following positions are open for the 2012-2013 school year:
Reading Specialist, Pre-K to Grade 2
We are looking for a flexible, talented individual who will cover a family leave until January, 2013 and then work with us in admissions and student support through the end of the 2013 school year. We are hoping to find an energetic, optimistic, and experienced person who has a broad repertoire of teaching and assessment strategies to support students who need reading accommodations. We value relationships between child and teacher, and teacher and parent and expect that the person who comes to Belmont Day School will support and enhance our robust commitment.
Responsibilities
You will be
- Collaborating with primary classroom teachers to develop appropriate reading plans for children, which include working with individual children and small groups of children to increase fundamental skills
- Conducting and interpreting informal and formal assessments to create individualized learning plans
- Participating in teacher-parent conferences and planning followup meetings and assessments
- Keeping careful anecdotal and assessment records and using them to contribute to the writing of accurate, comprehensive reports
- Participating fully in the fulfilling, demanding and rich life of the school
Qualifications
- B.A./B.S. degree or an equivalent degree or educational certification in education, reading and/or special education from an accredited college or university
- Evidence of expertise in compensatory learning strategies
- Experience working individually with children who have many learning profiles both within a functioning classroom and individually in tutorial situations
- Experience strategizing techniques in decoding and comprehension
- Strong skills sets in early literacy and administering and interpreting assessments
- Experience and interest in working with the latest technologies to support learning
- Strong communication abilities including speaking and writing
- Commitment to the BDS values of honesty, caring, joy, responsibility, respect and excellence
Preferred Qualifications
- Training in Orton Gillingham and other explicit reading programs
- Coursework and experience in reading acquisition
- Experience working effectively with classroom teachers

Communications & Technology Specialist
We are looking for a creative individual to provide support in the area of digital communications, instructional and media lab support, and documentation of special events. The successful candidate will have strong writing skills, be detail-oriented, creative, flexible and collaborative. He or she must be able to work efficiently, individually and effectively as a member of a team, while managing competing deadlines.
Responsibilities
Communications and Media:
- content management support for the school’s websites
- content management for digital signage and display
- archiving and managing digital assets
- creation of multimedia content for use online (video, web/podcasts, photography
- recording of events such as class plays, athletics, assemblies, and special programs
Technology and Instruction:
- provide audio and visual support to teachers and students for special projects and events such as the Pioneer Program for Professional Development and the eighth grade Capstone Projects
- assist in the organization of technology resources (hardware/software) for easy accessibility by students and educators
- support for technology initiatives such as middle school and faculty laptop and iPad programs
- provide logistical support for hardware and software to the school community to promote the effective use of technology
- collaborate with members of the technology department for the purchase and installation of necessary equipment for the technology program; to help define technology needs and development of school-wide policies, especially as they relate to external web development and archival work; to assist in system troubleshooting and inventory; and to teach electives
Skills and Qualities

We are looking for a dynamic, skilled, creative math teacher who will team teach in grades seven and eight teaching both pre-Algebra and Algebra. This is a new model for us and one which we anticipate will allow us to differentiate and both support and extend the curriculum. This teacher will be an integral member of the seventh and eighth grade teams, will participate by writing recommendations for our eighth graders, and will serve as an advisor. Deep knowledge and appreciation of both mathematics and children is critical.
This job means you will be:
- Team teaching four classes of fewer than 20 seventh and eighth graders
- Increasing the skills set of Middle School students so that they have a wide range of options for their high school education as a result of sound preparation in the Middle School years
- Working to ensure academic excellence by fully knowing students and adapting curriculum to meet their needs
- Collaborating with a team of teachers in the care of adolescents beyond the math classroom
- Keeping careful anecdotal and assessment records and using them to write accurate, comprehensive reports as well as high school recommendations
- Advising and leading in teacher-parent conferences
- Participating fully in the fulfilling, demanding and rich life of the school
- Relying on your considerable flexibility and sense of humor to joyfully participate in the lives of wonderful adolescents
Qualifications:
- B.A./B.S. degree or an equivalent degree or educational qualification from an accredited college or university in education, mathematics education, mathematics or a related field

- Knowledge of latest research and thinking about mathematics education

Physical Education Teacher-
Pre-K to Grade 6
A dynamic and talented Physical Education Teacher will work closely with the Director of Athletics and the Assistant Athletics Director to implement, maintain, and oversee all aspects of the school's robust pre-Kindergarten through grade eight physical education and athletics programs. The new Physical Education Teacher will be responsible for numerous activities including, but not limited to: program design, curriculum review, administrative duties, and teaching and coaching responsibilities. From demonstrating enthusiasm for our youngest students to introducing lifelong habits of fitness to guiding children through a competitive athletics program, we are seeking an experienced teacher who will delight in our excellent resources and our wonderful children.
You will be:
- Creating and teaching a dynamic and inclusive pre-K through fourth grade physical education curriculum focused on establishing fitness and a joy of movement.
- Collaborating with the athletics department to design, implement, and teach a comprehensive fifth and sixth grade athletics curriculum.
- A valued member of the seventh and eighth grade coaching staff responsible for preparing athletes for competitive high school programs.
- Demonstrating instructional excellence by knowing students, adapting curriculum, and keeping careful anecdotal and assessment records to write thoughtful reports.
- Working closely with members of the community to support the growth of the Health and Wellness program through direct instruction and creative programs.
- Remaining current with information on the developmental needs of children and adolescents, and taking advantage of professional development opportunities.

Qualifications:
- B.A. or B.S. degree from an accredited college or university
